 Assistant Section Officer (ASO)

Assistant Section Officer (ASO) is  called as backbone of the Central Secretariat Services, Government of India. Earlier, ASO was called simply as Assistant. Only in the 2016, DoPT, Government of India has changed the nomenclature of the post from Assistant to Assistant Section Officer. After changing the name of Assistant to ASO in CSS, other Ministries/Departments such as Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Railways, Intelligence Bureau (Ministerial) etc followed the same and also renamed post of Assistant as ASO. 

Recruitment Process of Assistant Section Officer (ASO)

ASOs are appointed under Government of India through two popular methods. One by way of Direct Recruitment and other by way of promoting Senior Secretariat Assistant (erstwhile UDC post) after 10 years of Service or through Departmental Exam. Examinations for the Direct Recruitment of ASOs  is conducted by Staff Selection Commission.

Roles and Responsibilities of ASOs

ASO has been classified as Group 'B' Non-Gazetted Officer. ASO is the lowest level Executive Officer in the Office. ASOs are generally posted in various Departments of Ministries, Cabinet Secretariat, President Secretariat, PMO etc. Within a Department/Ministry, ASOs are posted in a Section under a Section Officer who is a Group 'B' Gazetted Officer who work in the capacity of Supervisor and in-charge of a Section. 

In-hand Salary of ASOs

ASO is placed at Level-7 in the 7th CPC (Rs.9300-34800 + 4600 GP in 6th CPC). The initial basic at entry level is fixed at Rs.44,900/-. Apart from Basic Salary, Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance constitute the Gross Salary. Deductions such as NPS, CGHS and CGEIS are also applicable. If you fall in Tax Brackets then Income Tax is also deducted. In hand salary  for an ASO posted in 'X' Grade City (Delhi, Mumbai etc.) as on 03.03. 2025 is depicted below :



Promotional Aspect of ASOs

An ASO first get promoted to the post of Section Officer by way of Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE) conducted by UPSC and by way of promotion under Seniority Quota. The next promotion is the post of Under Secretary which is a Group A Gazetted post. After, Under Secretary the next promotion is Deputy Secretary and Director. At Director, Level most of the ASOs get superannuated. Those ASOs who enter into Service at very young age, say 21-22, then he/she might be promoted up to the rank of Joint Secretary(In-situ) which is considered a decision making post. So an ASO can reach upto the level of Joint Secretary under the Government of India.
